1. Will attending B-BAY increase my chances of getting into UC Berkeley?

It’s understandable to wonder whether a UC Berkeley certificate helps with UC Berkeley admission. But there’s no guaranteed admissions advantage from attending any summer program—Berkeley (and top colleges) look at the whole application, not just one program.

To confirm this, we consulted Kevin Covarrubias, Senior College Admissions Counselor at Crimson Education, one of the largest college consultancies in the world:

So even if there’s no direct advantage, both programs can still help you signal a genuine interest in business and entrepreneurship to UC Berkeley. The real question is: what will make your application more distinctive?

  • A strong foundation in business fundamentals and a well-structured plan (B-BAY), or
  • A real startup experience with proof of work—building, shipping, selling, and pitching (Leangap).

Also, keep in mind: everyone in the B-BAY cohort earns the same certificate. What stands out on your college application is what you did, what you learned, and how you can show it.

If you’re tired of talking about ideas and you want to build something real—something you can demonstrate with traction and results—Leangap tends to create more visible differentiation for college applications.

2. How do B-BAY and Leangap teach entrepreneurship?

The biggest difference between Leangap and B-BAY is what they believe “learning entrepreneurship” should look like.

  • B-BAY is run through UC Berkeley’s Haas and is designed as a rigorous college-prep business academy. Students learn business concepts across major disciplines (marketing, finance, accounting, etc.) and apply them by building and presenting a comprehensive business plan within two weeks.
  • Leangap is designed after real startup incubators and accelerators, where you learn by doing. Students are expected to pitch to recruit co-founders, make sales calls, navigate uncertainty, and become the leaders they need to be for the company to succeed. There are no exams, homework, or textbooks—students learn how the industry works by jumping into it.

3. What does B-BAY’s curriculum look like vs. Leangap’s?

B-BAY (2 weeks): structured, business-school-style immersion

B-BAY is designed like a condensed business curriculum:

  • Daily instruction: taught by Haas faculty and supported by additional instructors and staff.
  • Core topics: entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, accounting, negotiation, management, and ethics/CSR.
  • Final delivery: students work in teams to create a comprehensive business plan, which they present at the end of the program.

Leangap (4 weeks): real-world challenges, startup-incubator pacing

Leangap follows weekly phases that mirror how early-stage startups move:

  • Week 1: Ideation & Validation. Students pitch their ideas, form teams, and validate demand through real conversations and research.
  • Week 2: Prototyping. Teams build an MVP with mentor guidance—leveraging AI and no-code tools to speed up execution while still doing the real work of turning an idea into a prototype users can interact with and give feedback on.
  • Week 3: Launch. Teams go to market. This is where startups stop being “high school projects” and start becoming businesses: outreach, user acquisition, sales.
  • Week 4: Demo Day prep + Pitching. Teams polish traction, sharpen the story, and train high-performance public speaking—then pitch to a panel of industry leaders and a live audience, getting judged by people with a fresh outside perspective.

After interviewing alumni from both programs, we found that in B-BAY, the organizers choose the teams based on each student’s application. Pitches aren’t presented to the full class—only within each team.

In Leangap, students form their own teams. They pitch to the whole class (including mentors) from Day 1 and go through a Q&A round, just like they would in front of real investors—like on Shark Tank.

4. How involved are B-BAY’s instructors vs. Leangap’s mentors?

  • B-BAY lectures are delivered in a traditional academic format by instructors connected to Haas. The support system includes staff and teaching assistants (TAs), and the experience is designed to feel like a rigorous college-prep classroom environment.
  • Leangap mentors are active entrepreneurs and professionals who spend the rest of the year leading companies and teams. Their feedback is grounded in lived go-to-market experience—because they’ve had to build, sell, hire, and make high-pressure decisions outside the classroom.

5. How demanding is B-BAY vs. Leangap?

Both programs are intense—just in different ways.

  • B-BAY intensity = academic rigor + pace. You cover many business topics quickly, work in teams, and build a structured business plan in a university setting. You leave with a strong overview of business disciplines and a Berkeley-branded certificate of completion.
  • Leangap intensity = execution pressure. You’re building fast, collaborating tightly, and pushing for real-world outcomes. You leave with a strong public-speaking skill set and a startup that launched a real product or service, impacting people in the real world.
The words of a student who attended both programs

B-BAY is built around writing a business report. That means the business idea does not have to be real or practical, since the goal is to create a strong project on paper, not to test or build something in the real world.

B-BAY mentors review slides; however, they do not play a major role in pitch practice or presentation coaching.

Leangap students get guidance from experienced entrepreneurs who know how to challenge them without pushing them too far, from ideation to pitching.

Leangap also takes teen mental health seriously. Students have access to an in-house licensed psychotherapist who can help them handle stress, intensity, and team challenges in a healthier way, without pretending the workload is easy.

6. What is the closing event like: B-BAY’s Showcase vs. Leangap’s Demo Day?

Both programs end with students presenting what they’ve built—but the “product” they present is different.

  • B-BAY culminates in teams presenting a comprehensive business plan developed during the two-week program. Public recordings of students’ final presentations aren’t available online, so families typically rely on reviews and the program’s official materials to get a sense of what the event is like.

  • Leangap culminates in an open-door Demo Day, where teams pitch to seasoned industry leaders. Two awards are given that day: 'Most Outstanding Company' and 'Best Pitch'. Teams are evaluated not only on the deck, but also on the founders’ delivery—voice, clarity, structure, and stage presence.
